Inside Information: Lavender Essential Oil

Pure lavender essential oil is the scent that first inspired our co-Founder, Susan Griffin-Black, to start working with essential oils. She was so taken with the complex scent – floral, grassy, and herbaceous all at once – that our company has always had a line of pure lavender products. The soothing, skin-loving extract of the Lavandula officianalis plant is at the core of our product lines for its benefits and its soothing scent. Today, Susan shares her favorite uses for lavender and why it’s one of her all-time favorite scents.

The first time I encountered lavender essential oil, it captivated me with its honesty. Just a single drop on my palm evoked a world of aliveness – green grasses, sweet blossoms, herbal mystique, and tantalizing spiciness all enveloped my senses and before I could form a thought I was feeling an overwhelming sense of calm and connection.

That was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with this amazing plant. In our product lines, lavender is not only a key scent on its own it is a balancing note in many of our products. Working with lavender has become a cornerstone of our business – it’s common for me to ask if any given formulation could benefit from a little more lavender. It can bring a fullness to any scent blend, try adding a few drops to any blend to see what notes it evokes.

The benefits of this incredible essence span the spectrum of self-care; it is a gentle oil that can visibly improve both skin and hair and a soothing scent that inspires a feeling of well being amidst the storm.

Our Lavender is sourced from Bulgaria and France in farms that have on-site distilleries so the oils are processed on the same land they grew on. This allows the essential oil to be extracted from plants that have just been picked, which makes for the fullest and most potent scent.

My favorite way to use lavender essential oil is simply on the shower floor. I put a few drops where the hot water is sure to hit and let the warm, aromatherapeutic steam soothe my body, mind, and spirit. I also use it in a diffuser as a way to help fall asleep. Lavender is one of the only essential oils that is safe to use directly on your skin, and I will often use it for kitchen burns, bug bites, any skin irritation. I will sometimes put a drop or two on the inside collar of my top or jacket to help my mood during potentially tense meetings.

The easiest way to add a little lavender to your life is to use a product made with lavender essential oil. Using a body wash, hand soap, hand sanitizer, shampoo, or deodorant made with pure lavender essential oil can give you all the calming benefits of lavender without having to take an additional step – just wash your hands! We believe that essential oils enhance the quality of everyday life. That’s really why we started our company, to make the benefits of essential oils accessible. You don’t have to be an at-home apothecary (unless you want to!) to have relaxing, natural, and delightful scents in your life, take a moment to smell the lavender.

Lavender will always be one of my first loves, and it continues to be my go-to scent for nearly every occasion. What are your favorite ways to use lavender?
